Simian By Joseph Marshall

Writer: Tin Can PoetryTin Can Poetry

I catch myself

in a full-length mirror

an adult Homo sapien

in all its shame and glory

A lanky figure

with long orang-utan arms

just dangling there

waiting for their use

Sturdy legs on flat feet

supporting a dumpy torso

belly protruding forward

slumping the entire frame

A bulbous cranium

balding like a bonobo’s

just barely balances on top

wobbling between slack shoulders

How simian I look

despite the acclaim of my species

perhaps if we spent more time in mirrors

we’d all see how primitive we really are.
